Introduction to mold making for production ceramics. One day workshop with detailed instructions on mold making and slip casting techniques. Each participant will learn how to make a 2 part plaster mold of an object (objects will be provided unless the student wants to bring their own - please email me beforehand so we can consider the object's parting lines).
This is a hands on workshop, you will be getting a little dirty. All materials and supplies will be provided and no previous knowledge of ceramics is necessary. The outcome will be going home with your own mold so you can start casting ceramics!
hour 1+2: Quick introduction: What is mold making & slip casting. Examples in the industry. What makes a good object for mold making. We will pick out an object (fruit or vegetable) and go over the parting lines to layout the first half of the mold.
hour 3+4: Claying up the first half of the object. Setting up the cottle boards. Mixing the plaster and pouring.
45 min - 1 hour break for lunch/dry time for the plaster.
hour 6: Set up second half of the object. Make keys in the plaster, mold soap, mix plaster and pour. While drying, I'll go over slip-casting and give a demo.
hour 7: Clean Up.
Lauren Tedeschi's work is nourished by the participation of others. She's interested in designing for the way we eat which explains her passion for gatherings and why food and drink have continued to play a major role. Lauren started her education in the arts, concentrating in printmaking with a minor exploration in Italian. She studied in Siena, Italy where the rich culinary history and culture soaked into her creative process. She's ventured in winemaking, hospitality and has traveled through the Pacific; Thailand, Australia, New Zealand & Japan. All the while observing the details of how communities gather over a meal. Her role as a designer is capturing a feeling of imagination and making present the intangible bonds between people. Her work questions what food’s form or function could be, "a flight of fancy, layered with facts and fiction." Lauren's next project is about mobile eating, away from the table.
